Publication of the 51st amendment to the IFRA

On June 30, 2023, the 51st amendment to the IFRA (International Fragrance Association) standards was published. This change means that all players in the cosmetics and perfume industry will have to review and, where necessary, modify their cosmetic dossiers and formulas. This is a major change because it affects very common molecules such as geraniol.

This new amendment introduces:

  • 47 new restriction standards
  • 1 new prohibition standard
  • 12 existing standards revised (in particular Eugenol, Geraniol, Methyl eugenol)
  • 2 minor updates to existing standards and format changes

The 12 product categories introduced in 1949issue amendment, also introduces some changes:

  • Fabric softener sheets – dryer sheets (Cat.12)
  • Pillow spray (Cat. 11B)
  • Water jet diffuser (Cat. 10A)
  • After-shave all types (Cat.4) except creams and balms (Cat.5B)

Different implementation dates have been set for this new amendment. Depending on the cosmetic product (new or existing) and the IFRA standards involved, there will be different deadlines to meet for bringing your products into compliance:

Effective date of standards for new creations Effective date of standards for existing creations

I recently had the opportunity to complete the full training course to become a soap maker, and I highly recommend it as this experience was essential to the realization of my project. Cyril, a toxicologist by training and judge at the commercial court, passionately shares his 11 years of experience in cosmetics and soap making. With two businesses under his belt (a micro-enterprise and a corporation), he offers training tailored to everyone, whether you are a beginner with the idea of starting your own soap-making business or already established in the field. This training is designed to fit your project and your level, ensuring a personalized and enriching experience.

What sets this training course apart is Cyril's adaptability. He was able to adapt perfectly to my schedule, allowing me to choose a week of training that suited me. With my master's degree in cosmetic engineering and a year of experience in cosmetic regulations, Cyril adjusted the content of the training to my skill level, while still being able to train beginners with no experience.

To give you a little insight into the content of the training, we began by exploring the different types of business structures, analyzing the advantages and disadvantages of each. Cyril guided me in choosing a micro-enterprise for my project. We then moved on to soap making, focusing on the chemistry of soap and the selection of vegetable oils. Cyril helped me understand the composition of oils and directed me to reliable producers.

The regulatory aspect was covered in depth, with numerous concrete examples. We worked from my own soap recipe, which made the lessons even more relevant and applicable.

The amenities surrounding the training are also excellent. Free parking is available, and Cyril has partnerships with hotels for accommodation. I personally opted for an Airbnb located on a parallel street, just a five-minute walk from the workshop, which was very convenient.

Cyril's experience and adaptability make this training a valuable investment in your professional future.

PS: Cyril is always in a good mood, so make yourself comfortable—barefoot or with candy, anything goes during training!

    1. Thank you very much, Esther.
It was a real pleasure to have you in the training program.
      See you soon
      Cyril
