Elasticity test: scientific measurement of skin suppleness
The elasticity test has become the gold standard for quantifying the skin's ability to return to its original shape after slight deformation. This property, often associated with youthfulness, tone, and suppleness, is assessed using specialized devices such as the cutometer. The device applies controlled suction to the skin surface, recording the amplitude of deformation, rebound speed, and overall resilience.
Protocol procedure
A panel of volunteers representative of the target audience (age, skin type, sensitivity) receives strict instructions: clean the study area, refrain from using any competing products for 24 hours, then apply a precise dose of the product being tested. Measurements are taken at three key moments: before application (baseline value), immediately after application (instant effect), and at regular intervals over several weeks (cumulative effect). Each session includes several repetitions to ensure data reproducibility.
Parameters analyzed
- Amplitude of deformation : maximum distance traveled by the skin under suction.
- Recovery speed : time required for the skin to return to its initial state.
- Resilience index : ratio between return speed and amplitude, expressing the skin's ability to absorb and release mechanical energy.
These indicators are compared to an untreated control area, which allows the effect of the product to be distinguished from the natural variability of the skin. An average gain of 15 to 30 on the resilience index over 24 hours, maintained for several weeks, justifies claims such as «improves skin elasticity» or «makes the skin more supple and toned».
Valorization of results
The raw data is aggregated, statistically analyzed (mean, standard deviation, significance test), and presented in the form of graphs showing changes over time. All elements are integrated into the DIP/PIF (Product Information File), ensuring traceability and compliance with the requirements of the OCOS/OSAV (Switzerland) and EC Regulation 1223/2009 (Europe). This robust documentation reinforces the credibility of the product with authorities, distributors, and consumers.
Marketing impact
Thanks to reliable scientific evidence, brands can communicate clear messages: «Firmer, more elastic skin from the very first week.», «Long-lasting effect for 48 hours». The results of the elasticity test are often combined with those of the firmness test to provide a comprehensive view of skin tone, which is a differentiating selling point in the Swiss, European, and UK markets.
