Firmness test: objective measurement of the skin's mechanical resistance

The firmness test is the scientific benchmark for quantifying the skin's ability to resist sagging and maintain its natural tension. This property, which is closely linked to the skin aging process, is assessed using specialized devices that apply controlled suction or pressure to the skin's surface. The device accurately records how the skin deforms, the time it takes to relax, and the force required to return to its initial state. These parameters provide a direct reading of the skin's mechanical resistance and tone.

The protocol begins with the selection of a panel of volunteers representative of the target audience: different ages, skin types, and sensitivity levels. Each participant follows strict instructions: cleaning the study area, refraining from using any competing products for 24 hours, then applying a precise dose of the product being tested to a 2 cm² area. Measurements are taken at three key moments: before application (baseline value), immediately after application (instantaneous effect), and at regular intervals over several weeks (cumulative effect). At each session, several repetitions are performed to ensure the reproducibility of the data.

The results obtained are compared to a control area left untreated, which allows the impact of the product to be isolated from the natural variability of the skin. An average gain of 10% to 20% in firmness over 24 hours, maintained over several weeks, justifies claims such as «firms the skin,» «redensifies the face,» or «improves skin tone.» ." The data is aggregated, statistically analyzed (mean, standard deviation, significance test), and presented in the form of time evolution curves. All this information is included in the Product Information File (PIF), ensuring traceability and compliance with the requirements of OCos/OSAV (Switzerland) and EC Regulation 1223/2009 (Europe).

In addition to providing solid scientific evidence, the firmness test reinforces the product's marketing positioning. Brands can communicate clear messages: «Firmer skin from the first week,» «Long-lasting tightening effect for 48 hours.» These claims, backed up by objective measurements, reassure authorities, distributors, and consumers about the credibility of the skincare product.
